True Independence/Verdadera Independencia

     For those who receive our Friday Fiesta newsletter, you will know that we recently celebrated Mexican Independence Day!  Each September 15 and 16 our nation celebrates its independence from Spain and, this year, our family joined the celebrations wholeheartedly!  We began with a Saturday night fireworks display, followed by attending the Sunday morning parade in downtown Mexico City and a picnic in the park that afternoon.  The celebration continued during the week in school with some great reports presented by the kids in first person and dressed in costume.

     Para los que reciben el boletin de Paso a Paso, sabran que recientemente celebramos el Dia de Independencia de Mexico!  Cada 15 y 16 de septiembre nuestra nacion celebra su independencia de Espana y, este ano, nuestra familia se unio a las celebraciones de corazon!  Empezamos con unos cuetes el sabado por la noche; luego asistimos al desfile en el centro de la Ciudad de Mexico el domingo por la manana y terminamos con un picnic en el parque por la tarde.  La celebracion continuo durante la semana en la escuela con unas exposiciones increibles hechas por los ninos en primera persona y vestidos como los personajes de la independencia.

     As for True Independence....the Bible tells us in Psalm 119 verse 45 that: "I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts."  True Independence comes from seeking out the Lord's principles in His Word and then following them.  That freedom is our heart's cry for each of our children:  freedom from being unwanted; freedom from emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse; freedom to love and be loved; freedom to dream; freedom to become all that God has for them to be.

     En cuanto a la Verdadera Independencia…la Biblia nos dice en Salmos 119 versículo 45 que: “Viviré con toda libertad, porque he buscado tus preceptos.”  La Verdadera Independencia viene de buscar a los principios de Dios en su Palabra y luego seguirlos.  Esta libertad es el clamor de nuestro corazón para nuestros hijos:  libres del rechazo; libres del abuso emocional, físico y sexual; libres para amar y ser amados; libres para sonar; libres para llegar a ser todo lo que Dios tiene para que ellos sean.

        However, as a loving God He allows each of us the opportunity to choose, or reject, that freedom.  We must decide to "seek out" those precepts and put them into practice.  Just as some choose to seek out and embrace that freedom, others choose to remain within the "security" of their slavery.
     
     No obstante, como Dios amoroso, nos permite a cada uno de nosotros la oportunitdad de escoger, o rechazar, esa libertad.  Tenemos que decider “buscar” sus preceptos y ponerlos en práctica.  Al igual que algunos escogen buscar y reclamar a esta libertad, otros deciden quedarse dentro de la “seguridad” de su esclavitud. 
     
     Much like the People of Israel, after having cried out to God for 400 years to free them from slavery in Egypt, in didn't take them long to beg Moses to take them back to Egypt: "All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!  Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”  And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”" (Numbers 14:2-4)
    

     El Pueblo de Israel, después de haber clamado a Dios por 400 años para liberarlos de la esclavitud en Egipto, no tardaron en pedirle a Moisés que los regresara a Egipto.   ^“En sus murmuraciones contra Moisés y Aarón, la comunidad decía: «¡Cómo quisiéramos haber muerto en Egipto! ¡Más nos valdría morir en este desierto!  ¿Para qué nos ha traído el Señor a esta tierra? ¿Para morir atravesados por la espada, y que nuestras esposas y nuestros niños se conviertan en botín de guerra? ¿No sería mejor que volviéramos a Egipto?»   Y unos a otros se decían: «¡Escojamos un cabecilla que nos lleve a Egipto!»” (Números 14:2-4)


     Here is the Zaragoza family version of these verses:  "Several of the children grumbled against Victor and Julie, and a few others said to them, "If only we had died back in (fill in the blank with hometown)!  Why did the Lord bring us to Refuge Ranch only to make us do chores and study?  Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to (fill in the blank)?  And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to (fill in the blank)."
     

     Aquí está la version Zaragoza de estos versículos:  “Varios de los niños murmuraron contra Victor y Julie, y varios dijeron, “¡Si solo hubiéramos muerto en (llena el espacio de su pueblo natal del niño)!  ¿Por qué el Señor nos trajo a Rancho el Refugio solo para que hiciéramos quehaceres y tuviéramos que estudiar?  ¿No sería mejor que regresáramos a (llena el espacio)?  Y dijeron unos a los otros, “Debemos escoger un líder y regresar a (llena el espacio).” 

     
     Over the last several months, our second eldest daughter, Diana, took that leadership position in growing seeds of discontent in several of our children.  Her own seeds of rebellion, watered by negative attitudes, gave fruition to destructive acts that required Victor and I to follow through on an already communicated consequence by sending her for a time to her biological mother's place.  Sadly, those weeds also reached into Lolis' life and led her to threaten running away and, in order to assure her safety, led to our decision to take her back to her hometown.  
     

     Durante los últimos meses, nuestra hija Diana, la segunda mayor, tomó este puesto de liderazgo en sembrar semillas de descontento en varios de nuestros hijos.  Sus propias semillas de rebeldía, regados por actitudes negativas, dieron fruto en forma de actas destructives que requirieron a Victor y yo cumplir con una consequencia ya comunicada en la forma de mandar a Diana por un un tiempo, primero Dios, con su madre biológica.  Tristemente, estas malas hierbas alcanzaron al corazón de Lolis y la llevaron a amenazar con salir de la casa y, para poder protegerla de peligros mayores, nos llevó a la decisión de llevarla nosotros a su pueblo.

     
     We continue to press forward with the vision for our children that the Apostle Paul casts in Galatians 5:1 - "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." 
  
     Seguimos adelante con la visión para nuestro hijos plantado por el Apóstol Pablo en Gálatas 5:1 –“Cristo nos libertó para que vivamos en libertad. Por lo tanto, manténganse firmes  y no se sometan nuevamente al yugo de esclavitud.”


     We pray that each year as we celebrate our nation's independence from foreign earthly rule, we can celebrate our own greater freedom as we submit to a graceful, loving celestial rule!



    Oramos que cada año mientras celebramos la independencia de nuestra nación de un reinado extranjero y terrenal, podamos celebrar nuestra libertad, cada vez mayor, mientras nos sometemos a un Reinado Celestial de Gracia y Amor.

Back to School! De regreso a clases!

Our kids here at Refuge Ranch have gone back to school…a funny phrase for us because we do year-round homeschooling!  However, it feels like they have gone “back to school” because we have done some recent revamping in our homeschool here at Refuge Ranch and it has been a great blessing for all!  Actually, for me, Julie, it feels like the kids have gone “back to school” for the first time, because I didn’t go back with them!

Nuestros hijos aquí en Rancho el Refugio han regresado a clases…¡una frase chistosa para nosotros porque estudiamos todo el año!  Pero, se siente como si hubieran “regresado a clases” porque hemos hecho algunos cambios en nuestra escuela aquí en Rancho el Refugio que ¡han sido de bendición para todos!  De hecho, para mi, Julie, se siente como si los niños hubieran “regresado a clases” por primera vez, ¡porque esta vez no fui con ellos!

After eight years of homeschooling our children myself, and then leading others in the same endeavor, the Lord has provided enough staff for me to leave school and be a “stay-at-home” Mom!  (No mind that the home I stay in is about 50 feet from the door to school, but the kids are in school and Mom is at home!)

Después de ocho años de enseñar a nuestros hijos en casa yo misma, y luego dirigir a otros en la misma tarea, el Señor ha proveido suficiente staff para que yo pudiera salir de la escuela y ¡ser una Mamá en casa!  (Bueno, no importa que la casa en donde soy Mamá está a unos cuantos metros de la puerta de nuestra escuela….el punto es que los niños están en la escuela y Mamá está en la casa.)

Mireya, a sweet homeschooling mom herself began volunteering with us about a year ago in exchange for our helping her two adolescent boys with their English.  Well, she is now our school director!  The Lord had already prepared her by allowing her to spend several years serving at a Christian school here in Mexico that uses the same curriculum we do!  

Mireya, una dulce mamá  que enseñaba a sus hijos en casa,  empezó a servir como voluntaria en nuestra escuela hace aproximadamente un año a cambio de que les ayudaramos a sus hijos adolescentes con su inglés.  Bueno, ¡ella es ahora la directora de nuestra escuela!  Dios ya la había preparado para este puesto ya que pasó varios años sirviendo en una escuela Cristiana aquí en México que usa el mismo sistema de estudios que nosotros.

For two days, she led me and our other teaching staff in a very effective in-service training in order to assure that we all understood the new changes about to take place.  For the in-service, Mireya was the teacher and the teachers were the students!  Our kids got two days off school and found great joy in watching their mother and teachers do homework, get corrected for not pushing in our chairs and having to take tests! 

Por dos días, ella nos dirigió a mi y las otras maestras en un entrenamiento para poder asegurar que todos entendíamos los cambios que estaban a punto de ocurrir.  Para el entrenamiento, ¡Mireya fue la maestra y las maestras y yo fuimos las alumnas!  Los niños descansaron dos días de clases y ¡descubrieron un gran gozo en ver a su madre y maestras hacer tarea, ser regañadas por no guardar bien nuestros asientos y tener que tomar examenes!

Many new structures put into place have allowed and inspired the kids to do better work and more effectively.  These new structures include a start time and finish time for our school day, a better system for getting their questions and doubts resolved and, the kids’ favorite, a merit system!

Muchas nuevas estructuras han permitido e inspirado a los niños a hacer mejores trabajos y ser más eficaces.  Estas nuevas estructuras incluyen una hora de comenzar y terminar el día escolar, una mejor sistema de resolver sus preguntas y dudas y, lo favorito de los niños, ¡un sistema de méritos!

The kids earn merits for complying with school procedures, getting their work done, etc.  Then, each Friday, the merit store opens where they can purchase fun items with their merits or save up merits for larger items.  

Los niños ganan méritos por haber cumplido con los procedimientos de la escuela, terminar sus trabajos, et cétera.  Luego, cada viernes, la tienda de méritos se abre donde pueden comprar artículos divertidos con sus méritos, o guardar sus méritos para artículos más caros.

I have seen a jump in the kids’ levels of personal responsibility, both at school and even in the house, and a jump in their level of motivation to do their best.  Our home life has even improved as I am more relaxed and less pressured;  I have once again been able to spend one-on-one time with each of the kids on a weekly basis; dinner conversation is more interesting as I am not with the kids all day and can ask them about their day at school; and Victor and I have the opportunity to work with them on their homework, when they don’t finish their daily goals within the time allotted for school, and can do so as their parents, rather than their teachers! 

  

He visto un salto grande en el nivel de la responsabilidad personal de cada niño, tanto en la escuela como en la casa, y un brinco en su motivación de hacer su mejor.  Aún nuestra vida familiar ha mejorado, ya que estoy más relajada y menos presionada; he podido comenzar a pasar tiempo a solas con cada niño cada semana de nuevo; las conversaciones a la hora de la comida son más interestantes ya que no estoy con ellos en la escuela y puedo preguntar cómo les fue; y Victor y yo tenemos ahora la oportunidad de ayudarles con su tarea (cuando no lo acaban en la escuela) y lo podemos hacer como sus padres, en vez de como sus maestros.

 

Just as the Lord has provided for this season of ministry, we trust in Him to continue to do so as part of this new staff is only temporary.  I trust that since He has begun such a beautiful work in school that, as any of the staff members are called to move on, He will call somebody else to continue the work.

De la misma manera en que el Señor ha proveido para este tiempo en el ministerio, le confiamos que seguirá proveyendo, ya que una parte del nuevo staff en la escuela es solo temporal.  Confío en que, como ya comenzó una obra tan bella en la escuela, cuando Él llama a algun miembro del staff para servirle en otro lado, también proveerá alguien más para seguir la obra en la escuela aquí.

On each crusade we depend wholly upon the Lord for His provision for both the human and material resources needed to carry out the crusade, for His wisdom to know how to best handle, diagnose and treat each attendee and for His power to work in those circumstances and situations where human effort, knowledge and ability come up short!

En cada caravana dependemos completamente en el Señor por su provisión para los recursos, tantos humanos como materiales, necesarios para llevar acabo la caravana, por su sabiduría de saber como manejar, diagnosticar y tratar a cada paciente y ¡por su poder para obrar en las circunstancias y situaciones donde la habilidad, esfuerzo y conocimiento humano quedan cortos!

The recent crusade to a mountain village in the state of Puebla proved no different!

Así fue en la reciente caravana a un pueblo en las montañas del estado de Puebla.

For this crusade, Fishers of Men joined forces with a church from Mexico City.  Through that partnership, the Lord provided the team with a chiropractor/massage therapist who also believes in the healing power of Jesus Christ. 

Para esta caravana, Pescadores de Hombres juntó sus esfuerzos con una iglesia de la Ciudad de México.  Por medio de este compañerismo, Dios proveyó al equipo con una quiropráctica/masajista que también cree en el poder sanador de Jesucristo.

 

Then, the Lord provided the perfect patient!  She was an older woman who had suffered from back problems for years, to the point of being hunchbacked, bent over and dependent on a cane.  Dr. Lupita gently and wisely massaged and manipulated her back and neck, all the while praying and asking the Lord to work His healing power in her muscles and bones.

Luego, ¡el Señor proveyó a la paciente perfecta!  Ella era una mujer mayor quien había sufrido de problemas de espalda por muchos años, al punto de caminar agachada y dependiente de un bastón.  La Dra. Lupita sauve y sabiamente masajeó y manipuló la espalda y el cuello de la mujer, mientras oraba y le pedía a Dios que obrara su poder sanadora en sus músculos y huesos.

Upon getting up from the massage table, the woman was able to stand straight up and walked out of the crusade without using her cane!  You will note in the next picture that she is carrying her cane!  That is our God – the one who enables us to carry our cane, rather than lean on it!

Al levantarse de la mesa de masajes, la mujer pudo pararse recta y ¡salió de la caravana sin usar su bastón y sin dolor!  ¡Verás en la foto que sigue que ella trae el bastón cargándolo!  Así es nuestro Dios – ¡Él que nos hace cargar nuestro bastón, en vez de que el bastón nos cargue!

Then there was the man who had gone deaf two years ago!  One day, while getting down from a public transportation vehicle, he fell and hit his head.  Soon after that, he lost all of his hearing!  He had since become accustomed to speaking to his wife with hand signals, assuming he would never hear again…until Jesus came to his town with the Fishers of Men team.

Luego, hubo el hombre que había perdido su sentido auditivo hace dos años.  Al bajar de un camión de transporte público, se cayó y se pegó en la cabeza.  Después de ese accidente, perdió su habilidad de oír.  Ya se había acostumbrado hablar con su esposa a señas, pensando que nunca volvería a oír de nuevo…hasta que Jesús llegó a su pueblo con el equipo de Pescadores de Hombres.

The man came to the crusade to see if there was anything that could be done for his hearing.  The Lord gave Dr. Escamilla the wisdom to order an ear washing, thinking that, just possibly, the man had suffered some internal bleeding after his fall that had resulted in blood clotting in his ears. 

El hombre llegó a la caravana para ver si hubiera algo que se podría hacer para recuperar su habilidad de oír.  El Señor le dio la sabiduría al Dr. Escamilla de pedir que le hicieran un lavado de oídos, pesando que existía la posibilidad de que el hombre haya sufrido un pequeño derrame debido a su caída que hubiera resultado en unos coágulos de sangre tapando sus oídos.

Sure enough!  Upon washing the first ear and removing much built up material the man instantly began hearing the worship music playing in the background.  Tears began to run down his cheeks as the assistant cleaned out his second ear…fully restoring his hearing!

¡Así fue!  Al lavarle el primer oído y remover mucho material de adentro, el hombre instantáneamente empezó a escuchar la música de alabanza que estaba tocando en el fondo.  Las lágrimas empezaron a correr por sus mejillas mientras el asistente limpiaba el segundo oído…restaurando por completo su habilidad de oír.

Out of appreciation, the man went home and returned to the crusade site carrying a thank offering…three bananas, his only food for the day!  He handed the bananas over to the team, thanking them for his gift of hearing!

En agradecimiento, el hombre fue a su casa y regresó a la caravana trayendo una ofrenda de gratitud….tres plátanos, ¡su única comida para ese día!  Entregó los plátanos a los del equipo, ¡agradeciéndoles por su regalo de poder oír!

 Ruth is getting her Olympic routine ready!  We figure between Carolina, Ruth and Ana it will be the first time in Olympic history when sisters take the Gold, Silver and Bronze in the same event for the same country!  With God all things are possible!  Besides, if you shoot for Pluto you might hit Mars!

Ruth ya esta preparando su rutina para las Olimpiadas!  Pensamos que entre Carolina, Ruth y Ana, sera la primera vez en la historia de las Olimpiadas en que hermanas ganan el Oro, la Plata y el Bronce en un mismo evento para un mismo pais!  Con Dios todo es posible!  Ademas, si le tinas a Pluton a lo mejor le pegas a Marte!
